Assorted Buttons

Bowl Games and Other Buttons

The celluloid pinback button was patented in 1896 by the Whitehead and Hoag Company of New Jersey. It was an exciting new way to colorfully advertise products, commemorate people or events, support favorite causes and candidates, or memorialize a fallen hero by wearing on one's lapel, jacket or bag.  Of course, many students, fans and alumni have proudly worn pinback buttons to show support for the Badgers over the years.

One of the earliest Wisconsin athletics-related buttons depicts the 1903 football team on one face with a block W on the opposite side.  It is adorned with a satin ribbon and the seal of the manufacturer.  This button was made by Whitehead and Hoag.
